When George Clooney met Amal Clooney, his life took an unexpected turn. For years, the suave Ocean’s Eleven star had sworn off marriage and kids, convinced his life was already full and satisfying. But then something remarkable happened. The human rights lawyer walked into his world, and everything changed. George now admits he didn’t realize how much was missing from his life until he married Amal and became a father to their twins.
Back in the day, George was certain about his bachelor lifestyle. “I was like, ‘I’m never getting married. I’m not gonna have kids,’” the 59-year-old Hollywood legend told GQ in his 2020 Icon of the Year profile, published on November 17. “‘I’m gonna work, I’ve got great friends, my life is full, I’m doing well.’” But as it turns out, he was only seeing part of the picture.
Meeting Amal: The Turning Point
When George met Amal in 2013 through mutual friends, his perspective shifted dramatically. “I was like, ‘Oh, actually, this has been a huge empty space,’” George revealed, reflecting on the revelation that came with meeting his future wife. Amal, a Lebanese-British barrister, wasn’t just another person in his life—she was someone who filled a void he didn’t even know existed.

But the real game-changer came when George became a father. After tying the knot with Amal in September 2014, the couple welcomed twins Ella and Alexander in June 2017. George, known for his role as Batman in Batman and Robin, shared how fatherhood brought an entirely new dimension to his life. “I’d never been in the position where someone else’s life was infinitely more important to me than my own,” he explained. “You know? And then tack on two more individuals, who are small and have to be fed.”
From Bachelor to Believer
Before meeting Amal, George had been married once before to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993. Following their divorce, he dated a string of high-profile Hollywood stars, including Kimberly Russell, Celine Balitran, Krista Allen, Lisa Snowdon, and Renée Zellweger. But none of these relationships led him down the path of marriage or parenthood. Looking back, George can’t help but marvel at how much his perspective has evolved. “For 36 years, I was the guy that if some kid popped up and started crying, I’d be like, ‘Are you f–king kidding me?’” he joked with GQ. “And now suddenly I’m the guy with the kid.”
