A Year Like No Other: Ozzy Osbourne Reflects on 2019

Let’s face it, life can throw some pretty heavy punches at us, and for Ozzy Osbourne, 2019 was one of those years that felt like an endless storm. The legendary rock star, known for his electrifying performances and larger-than-life personality, recently sat down with Good Morning America to talk about the toughest period of his life. In a candid interview set to air on January 21, Ozzy opened up about the accident that changed everything for him.

In his signature no-nonsense style, the 71-year-old rock icon described the year as "the worst, longest, most painful, miserable year of my life." And trust me, that's saying something for a man who’s seen his fair share of ups and downs. This wasn't just any setback—it was a life-altering event that forced him to cancel his tour and endure months of grueling therapy and rehab.

The Moment Everything Changed

Ozzy shared the harrowing details of the night his world turned upside down. "It was pitch black when it happened," he recalled, sitting beside his wife, Sharon Osbourne. "I was going to the bathroom and I just fell. I remember hitting the floor and thinking, ‘Well, you’ve done it now,’ and strangely enough, I was calm. Sharon called an ambulance, and from there, it was all downhill." It's moments like these that remind us how fragile life can be, even for someone as tough as Ozzy.

Rebuilding After the Fall

It turns out the fall was more severe than anyone initially realized. As Ozzy revealed in a September 2019 interview with The Sun, the accident dislodged metal rods that had been surgically placed in his body after a quad accident in December 2003. To fix the damage, doctors had to perform three surgeries, leaving him with 15 more screws in his spine. Despite the pain and setbacks, Ozzy managed to find a silver lining. He joked that the fall got him "off his arse" and inspired him to dive back into making music. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade!

For a while, Ozzy didn’t fully grasp the severity of his injuries. "It wasn’t really a problem at first," he admitted to GMA. "I didn’t notice any difference. Sharon kept asking me, ‘Are you okay? You seem different.’" Sometimes, it takes the people closest to us to notice when something is off, and Sharon was there every step of the way, making sure Ozzy got the care he needed.

A Rocky Road to Recovery

Ozzy's fall came on the heels of a string of health issues, including pneumonia, surgery for an infection in his hand, and another hospitalization following complications from the flu. It was a tough year, but the self-proclaimed "King of Darkness" refused to let it keep him down. In November, he made his triumphant return to the stage at the 2019 American Music Awards, rocking the crowd alongside Post Malone and Travis Scott. If there's one thing Ozzy has proven time and time again, it's that he's a fighter.

The Grammy Award-winning musician absolutely killed it at the 47th annual American Music Awards, sharing the stage with Post Malone and Travis Scott. After the performance, Sharon, 67, couldn’t help but gush about her husband of nearly 40 years during an episode of The Talk.

“Oh, it was so good! The show — obviously it was the American Music Awards, so it’s all pop music and pretty little girls coming on one after the other with their little dances,” Sharon joked. “And then suddenly this rugged group of guys get up there and they just nailed it!”
